“Pray for the bliss of Kim Guk-whan, a firefighter who died while rescuing a victim swept away by the torrent.”

  □ Aug. 3, 2020 (Mon.) □ Venue: Conference Room of the Chairman at the Main Building■ Lee Hae-chan, Chairman of the DPK   I would like to pray for the repose of those who lost their lives to disaster caused by the torrential rain which swept through the nation, including the deceased Kim Guk-whan, a firefighter who died while rescuing a victim. Heavy rainfall caused extensive damage to many areas of the nation over the last weekend, including landslides and flooding. More rain is forecast for this week. The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, local governments, and relevant authorities are encouraged to be fully prepared and make every effort to prevent further casualties caused by heavy rainfall. The government and the ruling DPK will also make all-out efforts to minimize damage arising from heavy rains and come up with support measures such as prompt recovery and temporary housing facilities for heavy rain victims.

  Major economic indicators for output, consumption, and investment rose simultaneously in six months in June. Although the Korean economy shrank by 3.3 percent in the second quarter of 2020, the country’s economy outperformed those of other OECD member countries given that the U.S economy was 9.5 percent and Germany 10.1 percent, smaller than the previous quarter. Among 14 major economies, Korea was second to China. Although the Coronavirus pandemic is still spreading and the Korean economy is heavily dependent on exports, the relatively favorable economic performance for the April-June period attests to the fact that implementing strict quarantine measures can prevent the pandemic from hurting the national economy further. The government and the ruling DPK will maintain the current quarantine stance, rapidly execute third additional budget bills, and speed up a Korean version of New Deal project that is designed to prepare Korea for the post Corona era. I am kindly asking my fellow Koreans to trust the government and the ruling DPK that have made successful quarantine efforts against COVID-19, helping the economy favorably perform, strictly follow everyday life quarantine guidelines and continue active economic activities.

“故 김국환 소방관의 명복을 빕니다”

  먼저 구조 중 순직하신 김국환 소방관님을 비롯해 재난으로 숨지신 분들의 명복을 빈다. 이미 주말 동안 곳곳에서 산사태와 침수 등 많은 피해가 발생하였고 이번 주에도 많은 비가 이어질 것으로 예보되고 있다. 정부 중대본과 지자체, 관계부처에서는 보다 강력한 대비태세를 갖추고 폭우로 인한 인명피해가 더는 발생하지 않도록 만전을 기해주길 바란다. 당정은 폭우 피해를 최소화하고 신속한 피해 복구, 이재민들의 임시주거 시설 등 지원 대책 마련에도 총력을 기울이도록 하겠다.

  6월 생산·소비·투자 3대 경제지표가 6개월 만에 동시 상승했다. 2분기 경제성장률이 비록 –3.3%를 기록했지만, 미국의 –9.5%, 독일의 –10.1% 등에 비하면 선방했다고 할 수 있다. 주요 14개국 중에서 중국 다음으로 2위를 기록했다. 여전히 코로나 팬데믹이 진행중이고 우리 경제가 대외 의존도가 높기는 하지만 지금 상황은 ‘방역이 바로 경제’임을 보여주고 있다. 당정은 방역 기조를 유지하면서 3차 추경을 신속하게 집행하고 포스트 코로나 시대를 대비한 한국판 뉴딜 사업 진행에도 속도를 내도록 하겠다. 국민들께서는 방역 성공을 경제 선방으로 이끈 민주당과 정부를 믿으시고 생활방역과 경제 활동에 힘써 주시기를 당부드린다.
