  Tomorrow marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean War, most tragic event in the history of modern Korea, which occurred on June 25, 1950. I would like to offer my sincere respect and gratitude to soldiers who sacrificed their lives, veterans of the war, wounded soldiers and family members who lost their beloved ones, living in pain, and those war veterans who came to South Korea’s rescue under the UN flag. I believe that what South Korea has achieved to date has heavily owed to their sacrifice. Emerging from the ashes of the Korean War, the nation is now internationally viewed as a democracy with a great economic power. However, we have failed to establish peace on the peninsular, with inter-Korean relations repeatedly experiencing ups and downs.

  The two important lessons we have learned from the Korean War are: there should never be another tragedy in which the same people point guns at each other; and only peace on the Korean Peninsula will guarantee the survival of the Korean people. South Korea will not tolerate any provocative actions that North Korea will take. We are firmly determined and have enough power to deter a war. At the same time, we will not stop our long journey to peace. Peace will not be brought to the Korean Peninsula overnight. Only when the two Koreas exercise patience and respect each other, and are committed to active dialogue and cooperation, our two Koreas will in turn witness peace being established on the peninsular. In this sense, the ruling DPK is welcoming North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s decision to suspend military actions. I am urging the leaders of the two Koreas to come to the negotiating table again to narrow differences to bring peace to the Korean Peninsula.

 “6·25 전쟁 70주년, 한반도 평화는 하루아침에 이루어지지 않는다”

  내일은 우리 현대사 최대의 비극인 6.25 전쟁 발발 70주년이 되는 날이다. 나라를 위해 목숨을 바쳐 싸우신 전몰장병과 참전용사, 오랜 세월 고통을 견디신 부상자와 유가족, UN참전용사 모두에게 경의와 감사를 드린다. 그 분들의 희생위에 지금의 대한민국이 있다. 6.25의 폐허에서 일어나 우리는 세계에서 손꼽히는 민주주의 국가, 경제 강국을 일으켜냈다. 그러나 또 하나의 절실한 목표인 한반도 평화만은 아직도 수많은 굴곡 속에서 성취하지 못하고 있다. 6.25 전쟁이 남긴 교훈은 이 땅에 다시는 민족상잔의 비극이 있어서는 안 된다는 것과 한반도의 평화만이 민족의 생존을 보장한다는 것이다. 우리는 그 어떤 도발도 용납하지 않고 전쟁을 억제할 단호한 의지와 강한 힘을 가진 동시에 한반도 평화를 위한 여정을 결코 멈출 수 없다. 한반도 평화는 하루아침에 이루어지지 않는다. 남북의 정부와 국민 모두 인내심과 서로를 존중하는 지속적인 대화, 적극적인 교류협력을 통해서만 한반도 평화를 만들어낼 수 있다. 그런 의미에서 김정은 국무위원장의 군사조치 보류를 저희 당은 환영한다. 이에 남북 양측이 다시 건설적인 대화의 장에 마주앉기를 다시 한 번 촉구한다.
