“The 1st National Assembly must be reborn, not follow

Today is June 1st, marking the de facto first day of the 21st National Assembly, which began on May 30. The newly elected lawmakers should be resolved to make parliament different from its predecessors, enacting new National Assembly laws and establishing new parliamentary practices.

The 21st National Assembly should become a parliament that will lead the nation to successfully overcome the national crisis of COVID-19. The Assembly is faced with a stack of pressing issues to address, including the reconstruction of quarantine systems, the passage of additional budget bills, working on emergency economic measures such as a plan for a Korean New Deal, laying the foundations for non-face-to-face industries, preparing for the era of green economy, and establishing a more inclusive and robust social safety net. The 21st National Assembly should become a parliament that will push forward with reforms. The National Assembly should discharge its duties to reform not only the prosecution, but also the government, people’s livelihood, and society itself.

Over the past weekend, the number of newly confirmed coronavirus patients has fallen again from the previous week when the numbers had risen. The government and the ruling DPK will raise the quarantine guard in order to respond swiftly to possible risks and preemptively manage facilities at high risk of community transmissions.

It is difficult not to express our concerns in the face of recent media reports of lowered expectations for the newly elected National Assembly. The media’s negative take on parliament is quite understandable, their concern which surely stems from accumulated past experiences. To dispel such worries, the 21st National Assembly should directly address pressing issues one by one. The ruling DPK will do its best to prevent Korean society from returning to outdated practices. As the leader of the ruling party, I kindly ask lawmakers to do their utmost not to follow ineffective practices of the past within the Assembly.

“21대 국회, 지난 관행 답습 않는 새로운 국회로 만들어야”

  오늘이 6월 1일이다. 제21대 국회 임기가 사실상 시작된 첫 월요일이다. 이전 국회와는 다른 국회가 되겠다는 각오로 새로운 국회법, 새로운 관행을 세워야 한다.
21대 국회는 코로나 국난극복 국회다. 방역 시스템 재구축과 추경, 한국판 뉴딜과 같은 비상경제 대책, 비대면 산업 기반 구축과 그린 경제 시대의 대비, 보다 확장되고 튼튼한 사회안전망 구성 등 단 한시도 미룰 수 없는 과제들을 안고 있다.
21대 국회는 개혁 국회이다. 검찰개혁 뿐만 아니라 정부 개혁, 민생 개혁, 사회 개혁의 임무를 다해야 한다.

  지난주 늘어났던 확진자 수가 주말을 전후로 다시 줄고 있다. 당정은 신속 대응뿐 아니라 집단감염 발생 가능성이 있는 곳을 선제 관리할 수 있도록 다시 방역의 고삐를 죄도록 하겠다.

  최근 여러 가지 언론보도를 보면서 우려를 표명하지 않을 수 없다. 그동안에 쌓아져 온 경험에 의한 우려이기 때문에 개혁과제를 하나씩, 하나씩 이번 21대 국회에서 잘 처리해야 한다. 지난 관행을 답습하는 사회로 다시는 돌아가지 않도록 당도 최선을 다해야겠고, 원내에서도 최선을 다 해주시길 다시 한 번 강조해 부탁 말씀을 드린다.
