“The 21st National Assembly must be different

from the 20th National Assembly.”

There has been much controversy over activities related to the Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance. It is quite understandable that some mistakes have been made and undesirable deeds have been done over the last 30 years when activists have defended the rights of Japanese wartime sexual slavery. Even so, the 30-year commitment to defending the rights of the victims should not be a source of political strife and disparaged and abused by the ultraright in our society. If wrongdoings are found, the one(s) who committed wrongdoings must be held responsible. The authorities are encouraged to carry out swift investigations into the allegations surrounding the Korean Council for Justice and Remembrance; and I would like to ask fellow Koreans to carefully and objectively watch the developments of the on-going controversy and investigations.

Upon the launch of the 21st National Assembly, pressing issues should be dealt with. The most pressing issue the newly launched Assembly needs to tackle is to overcome the national health crisis caused by COVID-19 disease. There are also a pile of other issues that are waiting to be resolved in the National Assembly, including the reforms of the Prosecution and National Assembly, passage of extra budget bills in response to emergent economic situations, and unity of the people who have different interests. The ruling DPK will not yield to preposterous claims and logics made by opposition parties that are attempting to make the 21st National Assembly a parliament that would fail to function properly like the 20th National Assembly. I would like to ask the floor leader of the DPK not to accept bad practices done by the 20th National Assembly while attending negotiations with floor leaders of the opposition parties.

Beginning from today, 2.4 million students, including high school juniors and middle school seniors, are scheduled to return to school. Although the authorities’ decision to reopen schools appears to have been inevitable in consideration of various factors, there still remain infection risks. The quarantine authorities are encouraged to prioritize the safety of students by preventing schools from being affected by the virus. Once again, I kindly ask Koreans to make mutual concessions to a degree, including following strict self-quarantine rules, to protect students from a possible threat. The government and the ruling DPK will do our best to overcome this crisis.

“21대 국회, 20대와는 다른 국회 만들어야”

요즘 정의기억연대와 관련된 활동에 많은 논란이 있다. 30년 운동을 하면서 잘못도 있고 부족함도 있을 수 있다. 그렇다고 해도 일제강점기 피해자들의 삶을 증언하고 여기까지 해온 30여 년의 활동이 정쟁의 구실이 되거나 악의적 폄훼와 극우파들의 악용의 대상이 될 수는 없다. 잘못이 있으면 고치고 책임질 사람은 책임져야 한다. 관계 당국은 최대한 신속하게 사실을 확인해주고 국민 여러분께서도 신중하게 시시비비를 지켜보고 판단해주시길 당부드린다.

21대 국회는 개원과 동시에 엄중한 당면 과제를 해결해야 한다. 가장 급한 것은 코로나 국난을 극복하는 것이며, 검찰·국회 개혁, 비상 경제에 대응하기 위한 추경 예산 처리, 새로운 사회적 대화, 타협을 추진해 국민적 힘을 하나로 모으는 일까지 시급한 과제가 산적해 있다. 21대 국회도 유사 20대 국회처럼 만들려고 하는 야당의 주장과 논리와 행태에 대해서는 저희 당의 입장에서는 단호히 거부해야 한다. 원내대표께 다시 한 번 촉구하는데 20대 국회의 잘못된 관행에 대해서 더 이상 인정하지 않는 입장으로 협상에 임해주시길 바란다.

오늘부터 고2, 중3 등 240만 명 학생들의 등교 수업이 개시된다. 등교수업 재개는 여러 여건을 종합적으로 봤을 때 불가피한 상황이었으나 여전히 감염 위협이 상존한다. 방역 당국은 학교 내 감염 가능성을 가장 우선해 대응해주시기 바란다. 국민 여러분, 특히 학생들과 접점이 많으신 분들께서는 학생 보호를 위해 좀 더 생활 방역에 힘쓰고 자신의 일상을 조금씩 더 양보해주시길 다시 한 번 간곡히 부탁을 드린다. 당에서도, 정부에서도 노력하도록 하겠다.
