Marking the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Uprising, the ruling DPK held an On-site Supreme Council meeting two days ago in Jeonil Building, Gwangju and visited the May 18 National Cemetery. Selfish and shameful deeds that promote self-interest by disseminating false and distorted news regarding the May 18 Democratization Movement to discount its real value can be prevented only when those involved in such acts are punished by public consensus. In this sense, it is regrettable that the 20th National Assembly failed to pass a law pertaining to the punishment of those distorting and disparaging the history of the Gwangju democratization movement. Hence, a special act that can hold those involved in such acts legally responsible within the permissible scope of the Constitution must be passed before the year ends. In addition, based on the enactment of such a bill, the ruling DPK will also come up with legal and institutional devices to prevent false news and shameful words from being generated.

High school seniors began returning to school today and younger students are scheduled to return to school in phased steps by June 8. The occurrence of secondary and tertiary infection cases in facilities like hospitals near schools must be avoided. The government will do the utmost to ensure the safety of students by implementing optimal quarantine measures and showing swift responsiveness to potential risks. It is also encouraged for fellow Koreans to show a mature sense of community and citizenship to prevent schools from being exposed to a second wave of infections.

그제 5.18광주민주화운동 40주년을 맞아 민주당은 광주 전일빌딩에서 현장 최고위원회의를 개최하고 5.18민주묘지를 참배했다. 5.18민주화운동을 폄훼하고 왜곡하는 등 망언과 가짜뉴스를 통해 자기이익을 노리는 파렴치한 행위는 국민적 합의를 통해 처벌되어야 막을 수 있다. 20대 국회에서 ‘5.18 역사왜곡처벌법’을 처리 못 한 것은 매우 아쉬운 일이다. 헌법에 위배되지 않는 범위에서 5.18 역사왜곡을 처벌할 수 있는 법안을 연내에 국회에서 통과시켜야 한다. 아울러 이 법적 절차 합의를 기반으로 가짜뉴스와 망언들까지 막을 수 있는 법적‧제도적 방안도 추진하겠다.

오늘부터 고3 학생들의 등교 수업이 시작되고 순차적으로 학교 등교 수업이 시작될 예정이다. 학교 앞 병원 등에서 2차, 3차 감염이 발생하는 것을 반드시 막아야 한다. 정부는 최대한의 방역, 최대한의 대응수준을 유지해 학생들의 안전을 잘 지켜줄 것이다. 국민들께서도 공동체 시민의식을 잘 발휘해서 학교에서의 방역문제를 반드시 이겨낼 수 있도록 함께해주시기 바란다.
