“40th Anniversary Commemoration of the May 18

Gwangju Democratization Movement”

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Gwangju Uprising. I would like to extend deep condolences to those who fell victim while standing up against the coup staged by new military leaders. Furthermore, I need to offer words of comfort and respect to those who have been suffering from the long-term effects of torture, imprisonment, and injury as well to as the bereaved families of the victims.

The Gwangju Uprising was the major driving force behind the democratization of South Korea and laid the foundation for the creation of a democratic government, thus sowing the seeds for the advancement of democracy in our country. The DPK pledges that as a political party of South Korea committed to protecting democracy, we will never forget the spirit that would not yield to military dictatorship.

Even at the time when those born on May 18, 1980 have turned 40, the truth behind the Gwangju Democratization Movement is still buried, and those who attempt to distort and understate the Gwangju spirit continue to produce shameful and rash words and acts. These shameless fellows who have taken advantage of freedom of speech, hard earned by the victims of the May 18 Movement, are disseminating false and distorted news regarding the May movement and the citizen activists who lost their lives in the brutal military crackdown.

The DPK will not let this stand anymore. At the 21st National Assembly, we will legislate a special act that can punish those who have committed such shameful conduct within the permissible scope of the Constitution. The government and the ruling DPK firmly pledge every form of support for the long-overdue task of finding the truth behind the May 18 crackdown, which will be led by an independent fact-finding commission. Once again, I would like to offer prayers for the repose of the soul of former president Kim Dae-jung and those who lost their lives in Gwangju 40 years ago in May. I would like to commemorate on the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement while holding steadfast to our determination.

오늘은 5.18 민주화운동 40주년이다. 신군부의 쿠데타에 맞서다가 가신 5.18 민주영령의 명복을 빈다. 아울러 고문과 투옥, 부상의 후유증으로 긴 세월동안 고통을 겪으신 유가족과 부상자 여러분께 깊은 위로와 경애의 말씀을 드린다.

5.18은 한국 민주화의 동력이었고 민주정부 탄생의 기반이었으며 한국 민주주의 발전의 원천이었다. 우리 민주당은 한국 민주주의를 지키는 정당으로서 그 뜻을 결코 잊지 않을 것을 다짐한다.

80년 오늘에 태어난 분이 불혹의 나이가 된 지금에도 광주 민주화운동의 진실은 아직 묻혀있고 그 뜻을 왜곡하여 폄훼하는 자들의 망동(妄動)이 계속되고 있다. 오민주화운동으로 얻어낸 표현의 자유 뒤에 숨어서 5.18과 유공자들에 대한 가짜뉴스를 퍼뜨리고 왜곡하는 파렴치한 자들이 활개를 치고 있다.

민주당은 결코 좌시하지 않겠다. 21대 국회는 헌법에 위배되지 않는 범위 내에서 이 파렴치한 자들을 처벌할 특별법을 만들겠다. 또, 민주당과 정부는 진상조사위 활동을 전폭적으로 지원해서 이번에는 반드시 모든 진실이 모두 밝혀지도록 하겠다. 다시 한 번 故 김대중 대통령님과 광주 영령들의 명복을 기원하며, 5.18 민주화운동 40주년에 축하의 말씀을 드리면서 우리의 결의를 다짐하겠다.
