“South Korea, praised as a textbook example of successful quarantine implementation, will finally prevail in this battle against the COVID pandemic.”

During the last weekend, the queue of people waiting in front of local pharmacies to buy masks became shorter than before. Now the supply and demand of masks seems to be stabilized. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude and apology to my fellow Koreans who have stood such inconvenience till now as well as pharmacists who are cooperating in providing publicly supplied face masks at the expense of their own profits. The government is considering institutionally making up any damage those pharmacies are now suffering. However, we still have a long way to go before this health emergency is completely over. We are all encouraged to strictly conform to health guidelines, including social distancing. At the same time, efforts to prevent the economy from going into a downward deflationary spiral need to be doubled.

The ruling DPK will discuss whether it is appropriate to temporarily offer emergency assistance funds to support ordinary Koreans going through this on-going public health crisis and stimulate consumption in the market. The ruling DPK has looked at multiple measures including the provision of a temporary relief fund. The government and the ruling DPK will closely work together to come up with more responsible solutions to overcome this national crisis.

The pain caused by COVID-19 is likely to become prolonged, profound, and broad. I would like to say thanks to fellow Koreans who have been enduring such pain and have cared about and help their neighbors in need. The World Health Organization has praised South Korea’s quarantine campaigns as a textbook example and foreign media also highly regard our quarantine system, praising Seoul as a mature civil society where no panic buying took place. I would like to thank you once again who have helped Korea become a refined civil society. Believing our fellow Koreans, the DPK along with the government will mobilize every possible means to protect public health and the economy. We will win the battle against COVID-19.

주말이었던 어제와 그저께, 약국 앞에서 마스크를 사려고 기다리는 사람들이 예전보다 줄었다. 마스크 수급은 안정돼 가는 것으로 보인다. 그동안 불편을 견디어주신 국민 여러분, 송구스럽고 감사하다. 때로 손해를 감수하며 수고해주신 약사님 여러분, 고맙다. 약국의 피해에 대해서는 제도적으로 보답하겠다. 그러나 방역 비상은 끝나지 않았다. 사회적 거리두기를 포함한 건강수칙은 철저히 지켜야 한다. 동시에 경제의 침체를 막기 위한 노력 또한 전면적으로 강화해 가야겠다.

어려움을 겪으시는 국민의 생활을 돕고, 시장의 수요를 진작하도록 재난지원금을 한시적으로 지급할 것인지 여부의 문제를 정부와 협의하겠다. 저희 당은 그 문제에 대해 문을 열어놓고 검토해왔다. 이제 정부·여당은 그 문제를 훨씬 더 책임 있게 조정하겠다.

코로나19에 따른 고통이 길고 깊고, 넓어진다. 그 고통을 견디시며 이웃을 걱정하고 도우시는 국민 여러분께 감사드린다. 세계보건기구(WHO)는 우리의 방역을 ‘교과서’라고 평가하고, 해외 언론들은 우리의 방역과 함께 사재기 없는 우리 사회를 칭찬한다. 우리 사회를 이만큼 성숙하게 해주신 국민 여러분께 감사드린다. 그런 국민 여러분을 믿고, 저희 더불어민주당은 정부와 함께 우리의 모든 역량을 모아 국민 건강과 경제를 반드시 지키겠다. 코로나 전쟁, 우리는 이긴다.
