Yesterday the floor leader and I visited the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, and the Korea Federation of Small and Medium-sized Businesses, respectively, where we shared views on current developments of the Korean economy. Many of those who we met yesterday called for the swift passage of the proposed extra budget bill as well as other bills designed to activate the economy. Particularly, I was told that some 2,000 small and medium-sized firms expressed their interest in the inter-Korean economic project of the Kaesong Industrial Complex. The ruling party and government, with the policy committee as the center, will make efforts to come up with comprehensive measures.

Japan’s decision of imposing export curbs on South Korea is viewed as a unilateral, unprecedented, and preposterous act. To appropriately cope with the issue, the Korean government and political and business circles must communicate and work closely together. The Japanese government cited the possibility of illegal shipment of strategic items, including hydrogen fluoride, to North Korea for its imposition of export restrictions on key materials to South Korea. According to an investigation conducted by Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, any doubtful shipment of those sensitive materials was found. Japan’s export controls are a retaliatory measure with political purposes, which I think is a small-minded act. It is hoped that the government will cooperate closely with the international community and be also fully prepared for a slated director-level meeting to be held on July 12 between South Korea and Japan.

저는 어제 중소기업중앙회를 방문하고 원내대표께서는 대한상의와 한국노총을 방문해서 최근 경제 상황에 대한 여러 말씀을 들었다. 신속한 추경 처리와 경제 활성화 법안 통과에 대한 요청이 많이 있었다. 특히 개성공단 참여를 희망하는 중소기업이 2,000개에 이른다는 말씀이 있었다. 정책위원회를 중심으로 당정 간 종합대책을 마련하도록 하겠다.

일본의 일방적인 수출 규제는 전례가 없는 비상식적인 조치이다. 정부, 정치권, 경제계 모두 긴밀하게 소통하고 협력해야 할 사안이다. 일본 정부는 최근 수출 규제의 배경으로 불화수소 등 전력물자의 대북 반출 의혹을 제기했는데, 산업통상자원부의 조사 결과, 어떠한 의혹 한 점도 발견되지 않았다. 일본의 행위는 정치적 목적을 위해 경제보복을 가한 것이다. 참으로 옹졸한 처사이다. 정부는 국제사회와의 긴밀한 공조와 함께 12일로 예정된 한일 정부 간 대화에도 만반의 준비를 다해주시길 바란다.
