“Japan’s economic retaliation likely prolonged;

Korean government working on countermeasures”

There is no sign of Japan lowering levels of economic retaliation against South Korea. Instead, even after the House of Councilors election slated for next Sunday, it seems unlikely Japan will withdraw its move, thus prolonging the current stand-off between the two countries. The ruling party, the government, and the presidential office will try to solve this issue by resorting to bilateral negotiations, diplomatic efforts with the United States, and discussions of the issue at the World Trade Organization (WTO). In addition, we are also preparing mid and long-term countermeasures to minimize any damage done to Korean companies. The ruling DPK party has formed a “special committee on the Japanese economic retaliation issue,” with subdivisions under the committee in place: strategic division; industry and commerce division; and diplomacy and security division. Tomorrow, a joint conference with the government and the DPK will be held to determine comprehensive measures to tackle this issue.

Last Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill calling for an official end to the 1950?1953 Korean War for the first time in history. The passage of the bill has great significance in that in the 66 years since the de facto end of the war, the U.S. Federal Congress expressed its formal support for a termination of the Korean War. It is our hope that in taking this opportunity, the U.S. Congress, which has taken a lukewarm stance on the Trump administration’s policy toward North Korea, will engage in bipartisan cooperation regarding the ongoing peace process on the Korean peninsula. The ruling party of the DPK will work closely together with parliaments and political parties, research institutes, and NGOs in different countries to garner more support from the international community on the establishment of peace on the Korean peninsula.

 “일본 경제보복 장기화될 가능성.. 중장기 대응방안 마련 중”

일본 측이 경제보복 수위를 낮추려는 움직임은 보이지 않고 있다. 오히려 다음 주 일요일에 있을 일본 참의원 선거 이후에도 이번 사태가 장기화될 가능성이 있다. 당정청은 한일 양자 협의, 대미 외교전, WTO를 통한 문제 해결 등 다양한 외교적 해법과 함께 우리 기업의 피해를 최소화하는 중장기 대응방안을 준비하고 있다. 당은 일본경제보복대책특위 산하에 전략분과, 산업통상분과, 외교안보분과를 구성했고, 일일 점검회의를 하고 있다. 내일은 당청 간 연석회의를 열어 종합대책을 세우도록 하겠다.

지난 금요일 미 연방 하원에서 사상 최초로 한국전쟁의 공식적인 종전을 촉구하는 법안이 통과되었다. 휴전 66년 만에 미 연방의회가 한반도 종전선언을 공식 지지했다는 점에서 큰 의의가 있다. 이 법안으로 트럼프 정부의 대북정책에 미온적인 입장을 보여 온 미 의회의 초당적인 협력에 물꼬를 트는 전환점이 되기를 기대하겠다. 민주당은 앞으로도 각국 의회, 정당, 연구기관, NGO 등과의 협력을 더욱 강화하며 한반도 평화 논의에 대한 국제적 지지를 확산시키겠다.
