“The ruling party, government, and presidential office will be tough on Japan’s export controls on South Korea.”

The ruling party, government, and presidential office will strongly respond to Japan’s preposterous export curbs on South Korea. The day before yesterday, Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon held a related-ministerial meeting to discuss countermeasures against Japan’s move; and yesterday Presidential Chief of Staff for Policy Kim Sang-jo met with the leaders of the top five Korean companies to discuss measures to cope with Japan’s export restrictions; the day after tomorrow President Moon Jae-in is scheduled to meet the leaders of 30 major business groups in Korea; as for the ruling party of DPK formed a special committee to cope with the issue of Japan’s export controls and on the coming Friday, the party members of the executive council are going to visit companies that are potentially affected by the Japanese move and hold an executive council meeting there.

More than anything else, the ruling party, government, and presidential office need to thoroughly examine the possible impacts of Japan’s export curbs on the Korean economy and come up with countermeasures accordingly. The problem is, however, the Japanese government has hinted an additional retaliatory measure. What should be noted here is that Japan wants to escalate this economic issue into a political one by making an issue of the sanctions against North Korea. Japan should find ways to build a future-oriented relationship with South Korea.

With regard to diplomatic and security issues, the ruling and opposition parties must work together. As the leader of the ruling party of Korea, I am proposing that a meeting of the president and the leaders of the ruling and four major opposition parties be held as soon as possible to share up-dated information and discuss bipartisan measures in relation to Japan’s export curbs and the historic meeting between the leaders of two Koreas and the United States at Panmunjom.

당정청은 일본의 비상식적인 수출 규제 움직임에 단호하고 철저하게 대응해야 할 것이다. 그제는 이낙연 총리께서 관계장관회의를 열어 정부 대책을 논의했고, 어제는 김상조 정책실장이 5대 그룹 총수와 대응 방안을 상의했다. 모레는 문재인 대통령께서 30대 기업 총수들과 간담회를 개최할 예정이다. 당도 오늘 최고위에서 대응특위를 출범시켰고 이번 금요일 현장최고위원회의는 수출 규제 관련 기업을 방문해서 생산 현장에서 개최될 예정이다.

당정청은 무엇보다 우리 경제에 미칠 수 있는 영향을 면밀히 파악해 대응책을 마련해 나가야한다. 문제는 일본 정부가 비정상적인 추가 경제보복 가능성을 시사하고 있다는 것이다. 북한까지 끌어들여 문제의 정치적 파장 확산에 주력하는 점에 우리는 주목해야 한다. 일본은 한일 양국의 미래 지향적인 관계 개선에 나서야 한다.

외교, 안보 현안은 여야가 있을 수 없다. 저는 이번 문제와 판문점 남북미정상회담과 관련해 대통령과 여야 5당 대표들이 모여서 가급적 빠른 시일 내에 상황을 공유하고 초당적인 대응방안을 논의할 것을 제안한다.
