“Meeting of South Korean, North Korean, and U.S. Leaders

to Make History”

The combination of South Korean President Moon Jae-in’s efforts, U.S. President Donald Trump’s determination, and Chairman of the Workers’ Party of North Korea Kim Jong-un’s response made it possible for the leaders of South Korea, North Korea, and the U.S. to meet in one location, a historic and symbolic event for the first time since the de facto end of the Korean War (1950~1953). For the first time in history, sixty-six years since the armistice was signed, an American president set foot on North Korean soil. The meeting between President Trump and North Korea’s Chairman Kim, which was expected to be a brief hand-shaking event, turned into a third summit. The U.S. President extended an invitation to Chairman Kim to visit the White House. The two parties agreed to resume negotiations on the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and hold talks to reach a comprehensive agreement in two to three weeks. The Moon Jae-in administration and the ruling DPK party will strive to usher in a new era of peace and prosperity on the Korean peninsula, one built upon the results of the historic trilateral summit.

After some twists and turns, the National Assembly has finally resumed normal operations. The temporary session will last some three weeks. Parliamentary sessions will proceed as agreed. I hope that the Liberty Korea Party (LKP) will select a chairman of the Special CommitteeonBudget andAccounts as well as other standing committees as soon as possible, posts that the main opposition party should assume. Only in doing so will it be possible for the National Assembly to begin its review of an extra budget bill and other bills.

And starting today some important policies that will greatly impact people’s lives will enter into force: “Moon Jae-in Care,” which provides extended coverage for the state-run health care program; the introduction of a 52-hour work week system for companies with more than 300 employees, which were exempt last year; and the abolishment of a disability rating system. The ruling party, government, and presidential office will closely work together to minimize potential discord arising in the early stages of policy implementation.

문재인 대통령의 노력과 트럼프 대통령의 결단, 김정은 위원장의 화답이 어우러져서 사상 최초 남북미 정상회담이 판문점에서 이루어졌다. 휴전 후 66년 만에 미국 대통령이 북한 땅을 처음 밟았고, 짧은 만남을 기대했던 북미회동은 3차 북미회담으로 진행되었다. 트럼프 대통령은 김정은 위원장을 백악관으로 초청했다. 북미 간 비핵화 협상도 완전히 재개되어 포괄적 합의를 이루기 위한 협상을 2~3주 내에 개최하기로 합의했다. 문재인 정부와 민주당은 이 성과를 발전시켜 새로운 한반도 평화번영의 시대를 열어가겠다.

어렵게 국회가 정상화 되었다. 임시국회 회기는 3주 정도만 남아 있다. 합의된 의사일정에 따라 국회 일정을 진행해야 한다. 한국당은 예결위원장을 비롯한 한국당 몫 상임위원장을 조속히 선출해 주시기 바란다. 그래야 추경심사와 법안심사가 가능해진다.

아울러 오늘부터 ‘문재인케어’ 확대, 300인 이상 특례 제외 업종 주52시간 도입, 장애인등급제 폐지 등 국민의 삶에 적지 않는 영향을 미치는 중요한 정책들이 시행된다. 당정청은 긴밀히 협력해서 현장에서 발생할 수 있는 초기 갈등을 최소화할 수 있도록 노력을 하겠다.
