November 26, 2018. Excerpt from Opening Statement of the Party’s Supreme Council Meeting

“We must make every effort to mitigate another North Korean sanctions.”

 □  Party Chairperson Lee Hae-Chan   There was a very meaningful decision yesterday that the UN Security Council sanctions on the North-South railway joint investigation were waived. Perhaps this is the first case of sanction exemption in inter-Korean cooperation projects. I think it is a result of the ROK-US joint committee’s effort to talk and steadily persuade. In the future, we will have to continue to try to persuade and communicate with each other.   The President will leave the country for the G20 Summit and have two weeks of diplomatic activity. It is highly likely that the ROK-U.S. summit will be held in the process. It will be very important to persuade the United States to have good results on North Korea-U.S. summit. I also heard that the Blue House is preparing for it in a special manner. The Party will do its utmost to make sure the ROK-U.S. Summit and North Korea-U.S. Summit are held smoothly.     

"또 다른 대북제재도 완화되도록 각별히 노력해야"

  □ 이해찬 당대표   어제 남북철도 공동조사에 대해서 유엔 안보리 제재가 면제되는 아주 의미 있는 결정이 있었습니다. 아마 이게 (남북협력사업 중) 처음으로 제재 면제한 첫 사례가 될 것입니다. 한미 공동위원회를 만들어서 대화를 하고 꾸준히 설득한 성과라고 생각됩니다. 앞으로 다른 분야에서도 이렇게 서로 충분히 설득하고 대화하는 노력을 계속해서 해나가야 할 것입니다.   대통령께서 G20정상회의를 위해 출국하셔서 2주 동안 외교활동을 하시게 됩니다. 한미정상회담이 그 과정에서 열릴 가능성이 큽니다. 미국을 잘 설득해서 북미회담이 좋은 성과를 내도록 설득하는 일이 매우 중요할 것 같습니다. 청와대에서도 각별히 준비하고 있다고 얘기 들었습니다. 한미정상회담, 북미정상회담이 원활하게 이뤄질 수 있도록 당에서도 최대한 노력을 아끼지 않겠습니다.
