September 17, 2018. Excerpt from Opening Statement of the Party’s Supreme Council Meeting

"I Hope that the Inter-Korean Summit will be the Turning Point for Coexistence of People on the Korean Peninsula“

  Starting from tomorrow, the inter-Korean summit will be held in Pyongyang for two nights and three days. This is the summit where we are visiting North Korea, following President Kim Dae-jung and President Roh Moo-hyun. We plan on going through the direct route of the West Sea and discuss a lot about the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and inter-Korean exchanges. The most striking concern is expectedly how to realize the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. It seems that the special envoys are organized so that a large number of people can participate. I think that there will be a good result because it is occupied by people ranging from the seniority level to the future generations.  This is my third visit to Pyongyang this time, and I think many of the people I know are active in the office. I will do my best together with them to make good progress in the inter-Korean summit. After the summit ends, the UN General Assembly will begin on September 18, and President Moon Jae-in will attend the United Nations General Assembly and hold the ROK-US summit with the U.S. President Trump. I sincerely hope that both the inter-Korean summit and the ROK-US summit will be held in September so that there will be a very important milestone to bring forth the era of coexistence of peace on the Korean Peninsula.   

"남북정상회담, 한반도 평화 공존 전기 되길"  ■ 이해찬 당대표 내일부터 2 박 3 일간 평양에서 남북정상회담이 개최될 예정이다 . 김대중 , 노무현 대통령님에 이어서 세 번째 방북하는 정상회담이다 . 서해직항로로 가서 한반도 비핵화와 남북 교류와 관련해 많은 논의를 할 예정이다 . 가장 첨예한 관심사는 역시 ‘한반도 비핵화를 어떻게 실현할 것인가 ’이다 . 특사단이 골고루 많은 사람이 참여할 수 있게 구성된 것 같다 . 원로급부터 미래 신세대에 이르기까지 골고루 포진해 있어서 좋은 성과가 나올 것이라 생각한다 .  저는 이번에 가면 3 번째 평양 방문인데 , 제가 아는 분들 중 현직에서 활동하는 분들이 많은 것 같다 . 남북정상회담에서 좋은 성과를 내도록 같이 최선을 다하겠다 . 정상회담이 끝나고 나면 18 일 유엔 총회가 시작되는데 문재인 대통령이 유엔 총회에 참석하셔서 트럼프 미국 대통령과 한미정상회담을 하게 될 것 같다 . 남북정상회담과 한미정상회담 둘 다 9 월에 이뤄져서 한반도 평화 공존의 시대가 올 수 있는 아주 중요한 전기가 마련되기를 진심으로 기대하고 있다 .
