May 16, 2018. Excerpt from Opening Statement of the Party’s Supreme Council Meeting

“We hope that the misunderstanding and mere conjecture are refrained from ‘the postponement of high-level inter-Korean summit”

 ■ Party Chairperson Mi-Ae Choo  Today, the North has announced that it will postpone high-level inter-Korean talks under the name of the leader, Ri Son Gwon. About the North's announcement, Blue House is closely observing the situation, saying that "we are focusing on grasping and identifying the exact meaning of the North." Politicians and the media should refrain from misunderstanding and mere conjecture until the exact situation is confirmed.  The decision to discuss the follow-up measures through high-level inter-Korean summit that would allow the two Koreas to meet again reflects the strong will of the two countries for the continued development of inter-Korean relations. If we can discuss what can be implemented now as well as the mid- to long-term cooperation plan in a big picture, it will be a cornerstone for establishing a peace regime on the Korean peninsula.   Meanwhile, the United States and North Korea, which have North Korea-U.S. summit ahead, are speeding up discussions and are giving concrete plans related to the means for denuclearization. President Moon Jae-in is also busy preparing for the US-Korea summit to be held in a week by cancelling all the schedule. I am confident that we will narrow the gap between North Korea and the United States at North Korea-U.S. Summit and build trust in between the two countries so that it will play an important role as a bridge for the success of North Korea-U.S. summit. An upcoming one month will be an important period that will determine the fate of the Korean peninsula. The National Assembly should also pass the resolution of the Panmunjom Declaration and the ratification proposal as soon as possible to join the huge wave of peace on the Korean peninsula. Democratic Party will firmly support the creation of a complete and new Korean peninsula through the next two summit talks.   

 "남북 고위급회담 연기'에 "오해·억측 자제해 주길"

  ■ 추미애 대표 북측이 오늘 리선권 단장 명의로 남북고위급회담을 연기한다고 알려왔다 . 북측의 통보에 대해 청와대는 “북측의 정확한 뜻과 의미를 파악하는데 주력하고 있다 ” 라고 밝히며 상황을 주시하고 있다 . 정확한 상황이 확인되기 전까지 정치권과 언론에서는 오해와 억측은 자제해 주시기 바란다 . 남북고위급회담을 통해 남북이 빠르게 다시 만나 후속조치를 논의하기로 한 것은 남북관계의 지속적인 발전을 위한 양국의 강력한 의지가 반영된 것이다 . 지금 실행 가능한 것과 중장기적 협력 방안을 큰 틀에서 논의한다면 한반도 평화체제 구축을 위한 주춧돌이 될 것이다 .   한편 , 북미정상회담을 앞둔 미국과 북한도 논의 속도를 높이며 비핵화 방식과 관련한 구체적인 계획을 내놓고 있다 . 문재인 대통령도 모든 일정을 비우고 일주일 뒤 개최될 한미정상회담 준비에 집중하고 있다 . 한미정상회담에서 북미 간 입장 차이를 좁히고 양국에 신뢰를 심어 북미정상회담 성공에 중요한 가교 역할을 할 것이라 확신한다 . 다가올 한 달은 한반도 운명을 좌우할 중요한 시기가 될 것이다 .국회도 판문점선언 지지 결의안과 비준안을 한시 바삐 통과 시켜 한반도 평화의 거대한 물결에 함께해야 할 것이다 . 더불어민주당은 이어 개최될 두 개의 정상회담을 통해 완전하고 새로운 한반도를 만들 수 있도록 든든히 뒷받침 해나가겠다 .
