May 2, 2018. Excerpt from Opening Statement of the Party’s Supreme Council Meeting 

“Let's open the era of peace in May that may determine the fate of the Korean peninsula”

  ■ Party Chairperson Mi-Ae Choo   May that may determine the fate of the Korean peninsula has begun. The April 27th inter-Korean summit and the Panmunjom Declaration opened a new chapter that ended the era of the division of the Korean peninsula for the past 70 years and made the era of peace. The leaders all over the world are sharing intention and gathering strength for peace. The North Korea-U.S. summit is of the greatest interest. Not only will this be accomplished for the first time in history, but it will be a crucial talk that will determine the fate of the Korean peninsula. The path of peace that we are going on now is the path that is unheard of in the past history, and is the golden opportunity that will be difficult to meet again. I believe that peace on the Korean Peninsula is the fate and destiny of us living on the Korean peninsula. It is a summon and a mission and that can never be conceded.   And today, in some media, there was an article titled "When the Peace Treaty becomes true, it will not require the presence of U.S. forces in Korea." However, President Kim Dae-Jung's June 15 summit declaration even stated no understanding of the withdrawal of U.S. Forces in Korea between the two summits and that the USFK should remain stationed domestically. I declare once again that even during this peace treaty, the presence of the USFK is required in Korea, and I think that the people will also judge with cool-headedness on such deceptive article.      

한반도의 운명을 결정할 5월, 평화의 시대를 열어 나가자

 ■ 추미애 당대표   한반도 운명을 결정할 5월이 시작되었다. 4월 27일 남북정상회담과 판문점 선언은 지난 70년 한반도 분단의 시대를 종식하고 평화의 시대를 만들어 가는 새 장을 열었다. 전 세계 지도자들이 평화를 위해 뜻을 같이 하고 힘을 모아주고 있다. 북미정상회담에 가장 큰 관심이 모이고 있다. 역사상 처음으로 이뤄질 뿐만 아니라, 한반도 운명을 가르는 결정적 회담이 될 것이기 때문이다. 지금 우리가 가는 평화의 길은 지난 역사에서 단 한 번도 가지 않은 미증유의 길이자, 두 번 다시 맞이하기 어려운 천재일우의 기회이다. 단언컨대 한반도 평화는 한반도에 살고 있는 우리의 숙명이자, 운명이다. 결단코 양보할 수 없는 소명이자, 사명이다.   그리고 오늘 어느 언론에는 ‘평화협정 되는 때는 주한미군의 주둔이 필요치 아니하다’는 제하의 기사가 있었다. 그러나 김대중 대통령의 6.15 정상선언에서도 양정상간의 주한미군 철수에 대해서는 있을 수 없고, 주한미군은 국내에 계속 주둔해야 된다는 양정상간의 양해가 있었다. 이런 평화협정 때도 주한미군의 국내주둔이 필요하다는 확고한 입장을 다시 한 번 밝히면서, 이렇게 현혹하는 기사에는 국민 여러분도 냉철하게 판단할 것이라 생각한다.
