 “Renegotiation of the KOR-US FTA, with positive suboptimal results instead of concerns”

    Yesterday, trade delegation returned to Korea upon accomplishing the KOR-US FTA negotiations. It was expected that the negotiations would be difficult than ever as the steel tariff issue was linked to the revision of the KOR-US FTA. Nevertheless, in three months since the negotiations started in January, we have successfully pulled out the negotiation results that do not step back from our principles. Seven nations that are exempt from steel tariff include South Korea, and the mandatory use of automobile parts was a demand of the United States, but it was ruled out and the agricultural sector firmly maintained the red line without additionally opening up. Minister for Trade, Kim Hyun-jong, and the negotiating team both did hard work as they brought out the results in accordance with the government's principle of expanding mutual benefits and maintaining balance.   Last November, I also visited the U.S. and persuaded the U.S. Minister of Commerce, the U.S. Trade Representative, and the White House National Economic Council (NEC) Chairman, emphasizing the fact that we should pay attention to the trend where trade imbalance between Korea and the United States is being resolved.   I hope that both Korea and the U.S., which have built strong economic cooperative relationship on top of strong security alliance, will be able to maintain a mutually beneficial relationship. I also hope that they will do their best to enhance their national interests and national prestige in the remaining future trade negotiations.

“한미FTA 재협상, 우려보다 긍정적인 차선의 결과”  ■ 추미애 대표   

어제 통상대표단이 한미 FTA 협상을 마치고 귀국했다. 한미 FTA 개정협상에 철강관세 문제가 연계되면서 그 어느 때보다 힘든 협상이 될 것으로 예상됐었다. 그럼에도 지난 1 월 협상을 시작한지 3 개월 만에 우리의 원칙에서 물러서지 않는 협상결과를 잘 이끌어냈다. 철강관세 면제 7 개국에 한국이 포함되었고, 자동차 부품 의무 사용은 미국의 요구였으나 이를 뺐으며 농업도 추가 개방 없이 레드라인을 확고하게 지켜내었다. 상호간 이익 확대와 균형 유지라는 우리 정부의 원칙에 따라 성과를 이끌어낸 김현종 본부장과 협상팀 모두 수고하셨다.   저 또한 작년 11 월 미국을 방문하여 상무부장관과 USTR 대표 , 백악관 국가경제위원회 위원장을 만나 한미 양국의 무역수지 불균형이 해소되고 있는 추세에 주목해야 한다는 점을 강조하며 설득한 바 있다.   굳건한 안보동맹 위에 경제 협력관계를 단단히 쌓아왔던 한미 양국이 지속적으로 호혜적 관계를 유지해나갈 수 있길 바라며 , 앞으로 남은 추가 통상교섭에도 국익과 국위를 선양하는데 최선을 다해주시길 바란다.
