“The curtain of a new era going beyond the era of the 6·10 Democracy Movement is to be drawn up.”   □ June 10, 2020 (Wed.) □ Venue: Conference Room of the Chairman at the Main Building■ Lee Hae-chan, Chairman of the DPK   Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the 6·10 Democracy Movement, which coincides with the first anniversary of the death of Lee Hee-ho, the wife of late President Kim Dae-jung. I would like to extend my deepest respect and gratitude to those who defended this country at the expense of their lives as well as the deceased former first lady. The June Democracy Movement is a civil democracy revolution that serves as a demarcation line drawn between before and after the democratization of the nation in the history of modern Korea. Those who participated in the democratization movement and their children who led the 2016 “Candlelight Revolution” attested to the fact defined by the amendment to the Constitution in 1987: “The Republic of Korea shall be a democratic and republic, and the sovereignty of the Republic of Korea shall reside in the people, and all state authority shall emanate from the people.”   The 21st National Assembly that opens for the first time since the end of the Candlelight Revolution is responsible for the completion of the June10 Democracy Movement. The newly formed Assembly should usher in a new era that goes beyond the era of the June Democracy Movement by reforming political, economic, and social structures with undemocratic and unfair practices that have been accumulated over the course of the history of modern Korea. By reviving the spirit of those wearing ties who led the June uprising with the unyielding determination to change the current of the times, the DPK will make every effort to help the 21st National Assembly become a parliament that will help the nation overcome the national crisis of the COVID-19 disease as well as reform the times.

“6·10 시대를 넘는 새로운 시대를 개막”

  오늘은 6.10 민주항쟁 33주년이 되는 날인 동시에 故 이희호 여사님의 1주기이다. 민주주의를 위해 헌신하신 민주열사와 여사님의 영전에 경의와 감사의 말씀을 표한다. 6월 항쟁은 한국 현대사를 민주화 이전과 이후로 구분 짓는 민주시민혁명이다. 6.10 민주항쟁에 참여한 분들과 그 자녀들은 30년 후에 촛불혁명으로 87년 민주헌법 제1조 ‘대한민국은 민주공화국이며 모든 권리는 국민으로부터 나온다’는 것을 다시 한 번 증명하였다.

  촛불혁명 후 처음으로 개원하는 21대 국회는 6월 항쟁을 완성할 책임을 지고 있다. 한국 현대사에 누적된 비민주적이며 불공정한 정치·경제·사회 구조를 개혁하여 6.10 시대를 넘는 새로운 시대를 개막해야한다. 시대 변혁의 결연한 의지로 아스팔트를 달렸던 넥타이부대의 6월 항쟁 정신을 되살려 민주당은 코로나국난을 극복하고 시대를 개혁하는 21대 국회를 만들기 위해 모든 노력을 다하겠다.
