“The DPK will focus every possible means to prevent further spread of COVID-19.”

As the confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) are mounting, the situation is now alarming in Korea. As the leader of the ruling party, I would like to apologize to all fellow Koreans for that. This week the ruling DPK and the government will make the utmost efforts by mobilizing every possible means to contain the further spread of COVID-19. Yesterday, the government raised its coronavirus alert to the highest level and established the “Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters” under the direct responsibility of Prime Minister. We will make an additional budget request to fight the coronavirus outbreak as soon as possible and also strengthen civil quarantine and treatment systems. In addition, we will devise special countermeasures against facilities and followers of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, a homegrown religious group that has been regarded as the super spreader of Covid-19 in South Korea. We will focus available quarantine capabilities, including medical staff and equipment, into the areas of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province and make every effort to minimize the spread of the novel coronavirus to other local communities. The ruling DPK will open communication channels with local governments and provide utmost support to overcome this emergent situation.

The ruling DPK decided to temporarily suspend face-to-face election campaigns, beginning from today. We believe that this week will be a critical inflection point in overcoming the novel coronavirus. Hence, the ruling DPK decided to give up such an election campaign method and focus our entire resources on fighting off COVID-19. Needless to say, the well-being of the people is far more important than the election. The ruling DPK will temporally rely on online campaigns instead of face-to-face election campaigns.

코로나19 확진자가 크게 증가하여 매우 엄중한 국면이다. 집권당의 대표로서 국민여러분께 송구하다는 말씀을 드린다. 당정은 이번 주에 모든 가용수단을 총동원하여 코로나19 확산의 고삐를 잡도록 노력하겠다. 어제 위기경보를 최고단계인 ‘심각’단계로 높이고 국무총리 주재의 ‘중앙재난안전대책본부’를 설치했다. 최대한 빠른 추경 편성과 민간 총력의 방역·치료 체계를 강화하도록 하겠다. 신천지 시설들과 신도들에 대해서 특단의 대책을 마련하겠다. 대구·경북에는 의료인력, 장비 등 방역 역량을 집중 투입하고 다른 지역사회의 확산을 최소화하겠다. 당은 지자체와 소통채널을 구축하고 전적인 지원을 할 것이다.

우리 당은 오늘부터 대면접촉 선거운동을 일시적으로 전면중단하겠다. 이번 일주일이 코로나19 극복에 매우 중요한 분기점이다. 민주당은 이번 일주일, 대면선거운동을 전면 중단하고 코로나19 극복에 전념하겠다. 선거보다 국민의 건강이 훨씬 중요하다는 것은 말할 필요도 없다. 대면 선거운동을 일시 중단하고 온라인을 통해서 운동을 하겠다.
