Today marks exactly a month after the first case of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was confirmed in Korea. Since then the government and our fellow Koreans alike have made arduous efforts to fight off the epidemic.

However, the coronavirus outbreak has had negative impacts on some areas of the Korean economy, including small and medium sized businesses, independent businesses, and culture-related businesses. The ruling Democratic Party of Korea will again hold a joint meeting of the government, the ruling party, the presidential office and local governments to enhance the people’s livelihoods, which was held last year, to devise and immediately implement comprehensive aid plans to boost traditional markets and alley business districts. I kindly ask fellow Koreans to fully trust and support the government so that we can overcome this public health and economic emergency.

The DPK will hold a launch ceremony for the Election Campaign Committee in a low-profile manner amid the coronavirus outbreak. Yesterday, the party’s nomination committee determined 18 electoral districts for regional elections and two districts as strategic nomination areas. As of today, some 20 incumbent lawmakers declared that they would not run for the upcoming elections. The ruling DPK will make utmost efforts to show fellow Koreans that the party will implement a fair and orderly nomination practice and formulate fair, innovative and future-oriented policy pledges. As the leader of the ruling party, I promise that the DPK will carry out the upcoming elections in a sincere, humble, and earnest manner.

코로나 바이러스 확진자가 나온 지 꼭 한 달이 됐다. 그동안 정부도 열심히 하고 국민들께서도 정말 잘 대응하고 계신다.

다만 경제에 코로나19 사태가 너무 큰 부담을 주고 있고 특히 중소기업과 자영업, 문화관련 업체가 어려움을 겪고 있다. 민주당은 지난해에 이어 ‘민생경제 활력 제고를 위한 당정청 지방정부 합동회의’를 개최해 전통시장, 골목상권 확대를 포함한 파격적인 지원 방안을 수립하고 이를 발 빠르게 실행에 옮겨 나가도록 하겠다. 정부를 믿으시고 이 비상한 경제상황을 극복하는데 같이해주시길 다시 한 번 말씀을 드린다.

민주당은 코로나19 상황인지라 조용하고 소박하게 선대위 발족식을 열 예정이다. 어제 공관위도 18개 지역 경선, 2개 지역을 전략지역으로 선정하는 등 결정을 내렸다. 현재 민주당 현역 교체는 문희상 의장님 등 불출마 의원님이 20명이 좀 넘는다. 공정하고 질서 있는 혁신공천과 공정, 혁신, 미래를 위한 정책공약을 개발해서 국민들께 보여드리겠다. 항상 절실한 마음으로 진실하고 성실하고 겸손하게 임하겠다.
