“The LKP should discontinue its groundless suspicions

and agree on a schedule for parliamentary confirmation hearings”

The termination of the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA) is a matter of trust between South Korea and Japan, and the U.S.-South Korea alliance is a separate matter. Therefore, the South Korean government needs to take the end of the GSOMIA as an opportunity to further consolidate the bilateral alliance between South Korea and the U.S. As for the U.S., the GSOMIA is needed as a security cooperation mechanism between South Korea, the U.S., and Japan to keep China in check. It is an inevitable and reasonable decision for the government to end the security agreement as Tokyo continues to refuse dialogue and negotiations and Washington has shown a lukewarm attitude as mediator between Seoul and Tokyo.

Parliamentary confirmation hearings for five ministerial nominees are set for this week. However, the hearings for the justice minister and the Korea Fair Trade Commission chief nominees have yet to be arranged. I would like to ask for the main opposition Liberty Korea Party to reach an agreement on the schedule for the parliamentary hearing for the justice minister nominee in accordance with the Personnel Hearing Act as soon as possible. If the LKP continues to behave irresponsibly, the ruling Democratic Party of Korea will consider pushing forward with an independent hearing to inform the public of truth.

지소미아 종료는 한일 사이 신뢰의 문제이지, 한미동맹과는 별개인 만큼 한미동맹을 더욱 굳건히 하는 계기로 삼아야 할 것이다. 지소미아는 미국에는 중국 견제를 위한 한미일 3국 안보협력체계를 위해 필요하다. 일본이 계속 대화와 협상을 거부하고 미국 또한 중재에 소극적인 상황에서 한국 정부의 지소미아 종료는 불가피하면서도 타당한 결정이다.

이번 주에 장관 후보자 5명의 인사청문회가 열리나 아직도 법무부장관과 공정위원장 후보자 청문회는 날짜가 정해지지 않았다. 자유한국당은 인사청문회법에 따라 조속히 법무부장관 후보자 인사청문회 일정을 합의하기를 요구한다. 자유한국당의 무책임한 행동이 계속되면 민주당은 단독으로라도 국민들께 진실을 알리는 청문회를 단행하겠다.
