“With an Extraordinary Session for June to Open, 

It Is Hoped that the LKP Will Be Cooperative in Handling Bills on the People’s Livelihoods”

The National Assembly is expected to resume operations for the first time in 77 days by opening an extraordinary session for the month of June. Speaker of the National Assembly Moon Hee-sang has said that he would make efforts to reach a compromise with the main opposition Liberty Korea Party until the end of this week. However, if he fails to do so, an administrative policy speech by the Prime Minister will be delivered on June 24th. It has been known that the LKP will attend personnel hearings; I hope they will be cooperative in holding a parliamentary review on the government-proposed extra budget bill and passing other bills directly related to the people’s livelihoods.

It has been reported that China’s President Xi Jin-ping will visit Pyongyang on June 20-21. This upcoming meeting marks a fifth round one between the two leaders of Pyongyang and Beijing. A series of recent developments regarding the on-going Korean peace process has taken a new turn, which include President Moon’s Stockholm proposal, exchange of letters between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chairman of North Korea Kim Jong-un, and North Korea’s condolence call to mark the death of former First Lady Lee Hee-ho. It is wished that the scheduled meeting between the two leaders of North Korea and China, along with a G20 summit between Washington and Beijing and Trump’s state visit to Seoul, will serve as a catalyst to resume dialogue not only between the two Koreas but also between the U.S. and North Korea.

국회 파행 77일 만에 6월 임시국회가 열리게 되었다. 문희상 의장께서는 주말까지 합의를 시도해보고 안 되면 24일에는 국무총리 시정연설을 진행하겠다고 말씀하셨다. 한국당은 인사청문회에는 참여하는 입장이라고 하는데, 추경 심사와 민생 현안 해결에도 힘을 함께해야 할 것이다.

시진핑 중국 국가주석이 20일, 21일 북한을 방문한다고 한다. 이번 회담은 김정은 위원장과 시진핑 주석의 5번째 회담이다. 최근 문재인 대통령이 스톡홀름 제안을 발표하고 트럼프 대통령과 김정은 위원장 간의 친서외교가 재개되고 북한이 이희호 여사를 조문하는 등 비핵화 협상과 남북관계의 새 국면이 열리고 있다. 이번 북중정상회담이 G20 미중정상회담, 트럼프 대통령의 방한을 통해 계속 발전해서 남북정상회담, 북미정상회담이 이루어지기를 기대하겠다.
