“The long-awaited day has finally arrived to establish a new establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula, putting an end to the cold war era”

Today, the second summit between North Korea and the U.S. begins in Hanoi, Vietnam. There are high expectations that this critical upcoming summit will produce tangible results since their Singapore summit last year. Although there have been many media reports that the two parties could reach a deal on declaring an end to the 1950-53 Korean War, we should pay keen attention to the developments right up to the last minute. As I spoke of last time when I visited the U.S., the two leaders’ Hanoi meeting is of great importance given that the outcome of the meeting will highly likely determine the fate of the 80 million Koreans living on the peninsula. I sincerely hope that the North Korea-U.S. summit will be successful in denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and opening a new era of peace, thus ending the two Koreas’ seven decades of separation.

오늘부터 하노이에서 북미정상회담이 시작된다. 지난 싱가포르 정상회담 이후에 실질적인 성과를 내는 중요한 회담이 될 거라고 기대를 많이 하고 있다. 종전선언까지 상호간에 합의된다는 언론보도도 많이 있지만, 마지막까지 우리가 예의주시 해야 한다. 제가 지난번에 미국에 가서도 말씀을 드렸는데 이번 북미정상회담의 결과에 따라서 한반도에 살고 있는 8천만 한민족의 생존이 걸린 매우 중요한 회담이라고 생각한다. 아무쪼록 회담이 좋은 성과를 내어서 한반도 비핵화와 평화체제가 구축되어 70년 분단사 냉전체제를 마감하는 회담이 되기를 진심으로 기원한다.
