October 15, 2018. Excerpt from Opening Statement of the Party’s Supreme Council Meeting

"The Pope wants to visit North Korea next spring ... This has a lot of meanings"   □ Party Chairperson Lee Hae-Chan   President Moon Jae-in is now on his way to visiting countries in Europe. Yesterday, he was introduced as a welcomed figure as a guardian of peace on Le Monde. President Moon Jae-in is doing a lot of dialogue to spread European support for peace policy. This time, he will visit four countries and the Vatican. As far as I am concerned, there are words that the Pope wants to visit North Korea next spring. This time, President Moon Jae-in said, "If Chairman Kim Jong Un visited North Korea last time, he would welcome him very much." So, if President Moon Jae-in delivers such message, I also think it will be very meaningful for the Pope to visit North Korea next spring as far as possible.   In addition, there will be high-level inter-Korean talks this week, and it is expected that contact with Stephen Biegun, Special Representative of the U.S. State Department, and Top Vice Minister Choi Sun-hee will take place. I think this week will become an important week that leads to the peace and denuclearization of the Korean peninsula between South and North Korea.   

"교황 내년 봄 北 방문 원해…큰 의미 있다"

   □ 이해찬 대표   문재인 대통령께서 지금 유럽에 순방중이시다 . 어제 프랑스 르몽드지에는 평화의 수호자로 환호 받는 인물이라고 표지에 소개되었다고 한다 . 문재인 대통령께서 평화정책에 대한 유럽의 지지 확산을 위해서 많은 대화를 하고 계시다 . 이번에는 네 나라와 교황청을 방문하시게 되는데 , 제가 들은 바로는 교황께서는 내년 봄에 북한을 방문하고 싶어 하신다는 얘기가 있다 . 이번에 문재인 대통령께서 가셔서 지난번에 김정은 위원장이 방북을 하시면 아주 크게 환영을 하겠다는 그런 말씀이 있으셨기 때문에 그 뜻을 문재인 대통령께서 전달을 하셔서 가능한 한 교황께서 내년 봄에 북한을 방문하는 것도 굉장히 큰 의미가 있겠다는 생각이 든다 .   그 외에도 이번 주에는 남북 고위급 회담이 열리고 또 비건 국무부 특별대표와 최선희 외무부 부상의 접촉도 있을 것으로 예상이 된다 . 이번 주가 남북 간에 한반도 평화와 비핵화로 가는 중요한 한 주가 되지 않을까 생각한다 .
