April 16, 2018. Excerpt from Opening Statement of the Party’s Supreme Council Meeting

"Sewol Ferry disaster, I still feel ashamed and responsible"

   ■ Party Chairperson Mi-Ae Choo   It is the fourth spring after the Sewol Ferry disaster. The faded ribbons and the tears that are not dried up are still before our eyes, and the indifferent blue sea of ??Paegmok port is so heartless. I commemorate the souls of the victims of the Sewol Ferry and give my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We are still ashamed and burdened with responsibility before the truth of Sewol Ferry, which is still not fully revealed. Republic of Korea can be transformed into an entirely new one only if the whole truth about the Sewol Ferry disaster comes down to bedrock. It is surprising that the joint farewell ceremony hosted by the government will be held today for the first time in four years after the disaster. Democratic Party will give full support so that the newly established second Presidential Truth Commission on Sewol Ferry Incident will do thorough investigation of the truth. Sewol Ferry disaster notified us of the dignity of life and the responsibility of the state, which will be revived as the fundamental right of the people and the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution. In addition, as soon as the Sewol Ferry is built right, we must resume the activities to clear up the five missing people and ease the pain on the agony of the families that remain to the end. Democratic Party, together with the people, will continue to practice and act for the Republic of Korea, not forgetting and remembering Sewol Ferry forever.

 “세월호 참사, 여전히 부끄럽고 책임감 느껴”

 ■ 추미애 대표 세월호 참사 이후 네 번째 봄을 맞이한다. 빛바랜 리본과 마르지 않은 눈물이 아직 눈앞에 선하고 팽목항의 무심한 푸른 바다가 야속하기만 하다.

세월호 희생자의 넋을 추모하며 유가족 여러분께 깊은 위로의 말씀을 드린다. 완전히 밝혀지지 않는 세월호 진실 앞에 우리는 여전히 부끄럽고 무거운 책임감을 느낀다.

세월호 참사에 대한 온전한 진상규명이 이뤄져야 대한민국은 새롭게 변화될 수 있다. 오늘 열리는 정부 주관 합동영결식이 참사 이후 4 년 만에 처음으로 열린다는 사실이 놀라울 따름이다.

더불어민주당은 새로 출범한 제2기 세월호진상규명위원회가 철저한 진상규명을 할 수 있도록 있는 힘을 다해 지원하겠다 . 세월호는 우리에게 생명의 존엄과 국가의 책무를 알려주었다, 이는 국민의 기본권으로서 헌법이 보장하는 생명권으로 되살아날 것이다 . 또한 세월호가 바로 세워지는 대로 5 명의 미수습자에 대한 수습 활동도 재개해 마지막까지 남은 가족의 아픔을 보듬어야 한다.

더불어민주당은 국민과 함께 세월호를 영원히 잊지 않고 기억하며 안전한 대한민국을 위해 실천하고 행동해 나가겠다.
