“South Korea, a country with cultural power.”

The film Parasite directed by Bong Joon-ho won four Oscars at the Academy Awards of 2020. Director Bong’s film is a masterpiece that will leave an indelible imprint in the film history of Korea as well as the world. A documentary film about the sinking of the South Korean passenger ferry, “Sewol” in 2014, titled In the Absence, also made the shortlist in the documentary short subject category although it did not take home an award. South Korea is becoming a nation that possesses significant cultural soft power, as aspired by Baekbeom Kim Gu who once said, “I wish Korea were a cultural power.” The power of culture comes from imagination and creativity, and the source of creativity comes from a democracy that ensures the freedom of its citizens. 

What is more important than the quarantine and treatment of the novel coronavirus outbreak is to minimize any adverse effects the outbreak may bring about on the Korean economy. Fortunately, according to the employment trend in January released today, 568,000 new jobs were added last month, up 0.8 percent from the previous year. The good news is that auto makers whose assembly lines were stopped have resumed their operations. The government and the ruling DPK worked on comprehensive measures to support small and medium sized entrepreneurs, from production and management to finance and sales support. These measures, which were announced by the government recently, are expected to alleviate difficulties facing these small businesses; the government and the ruling party are planning to prepare additional support measures by keeping communications open with small business owners, including taxation issues. 

The first round of recruiting people of talent was completed yesterday, which lasted for more than one month. The recruitment was designed to make it possible for the ruling DPK to further its capabilities of serving the public as well as to nominate competent candidates for the upcoming general elections in two months. The ruling DPK is planning to bring in more talented people to enhance the party’s capabilities, while making efforts to reform the government and the National Assembly, thus helping the government reboot as a responsible government and the National Assembly as a working parliament.

“높은 문화의 힘을 가진 나라, 대한민국”

봉준호 감독이 만든 ‘기생충’이 아카데미 영화제에서 4부문 석권을 했다. 한국과 세계 영화사에 길이 남을 명작을 만든 것이다. 세월호 참사를 다룬 ‘부재의 기억’도 비록 상을 받지는 못했지만 단편 다큐멘터리 후보에 올랐다. 이미 한국은 백범 김구 선생께서 염원하셨던 높은 문화의 힘을 가진 나라가 되어 가고 있다. 문화의 힘은 상상력과 창의력에서 나오며, 그 창의력의 원천은 시민의 자유를 보장하는 민주주의에 있다.
신종 코로나 바이러스 방역과 치료만큼 중요한 것이 우리 경제에 미칠 나쁜 영향을 최소화하는 것이다. 다행히 오늘 발표된 ‘1월 고용동향’을 보니 취업자가 전년대비 56만 8천명 증가했고, 고용률도 0.8%나 상승했다. 조업을 중단했던 자동차업체도 다시 조업을 재개했다는 좋은 소식이 들려온다. 당정이 함께 생산뿐만 아니라 경영, 금융, 판매지원까지 중소기업 상공인 활력 제고 대책을 마련해서 조금 전에 정부가 발표했다. 이번 대책으로 당장 어려움을 해소할 수 있을 것인데 향후 현장과 지속 소통하며 세금 문제 등 지원 대책을 마련하겠다.
한 달여간 계속되어 온 인재영입이 어제로 1차 마무리됐다. 이번 인재영입은 두 달 앞으로 다가온 총선에 좋은 인재를 공천하기 위한 것도 있지만 더 중요한 목표는 민주당이 국민을 위해 더 많이 일하고 더 잘 일할 수 있는 역량을 갖추도록 하는 것이다. 앞으로 더 많은 인재들이 당에 오셔서 당의 역량을 높이고 정부와 국회를 혁신 해 일하는 국회, 책임 있는 정부를 만들도록 항상 혁신하고 노력하는 민주당이 되겠다.
